Module 2 part 2- Classification Schemes

Great to be in familiar territory !! The DDC - Dewey Decimal Classification System  website is a simple website to get a background on DDC. I have used it to explain bits to the students I teach. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvrjOS6udlY
Let's Do Dewey
http://frank.mtsu.edu/~vvesper/dewey2.htm was great for me as a TL. I found it fun and helpful.
The OCLO website (Online Computer Library Center ) is informative.

 More new websites ...
http://hilt.cdlr.strath.ac.uk/Sources/thesauri.html   A-Z of Thesauri - HILT reports
But my favourite was
http://trove.nla.gov.au/picture?q=
TROVE- A web service based on metadata held at the National Library in Canberra. I searched the suburb I've just moved to and found amazing photos of how the town looked 80 years ago and loads of history. I could get lost in the website !!It is helpful if you know what you are looking for.
Then we went to music !!
http://mp3.com/ - this is a website for musos !!
Getting closer to work ... although I can see that some students will benefit from these websites. we began talking about SCIS - Schools Catalogue Information Services. It was established by state and  federal government , independent and catholic schools to "provide a service with the aim of reducing the cost and duplication of effort required by teacher Librarians in cataloguing resources in schools". ( Curriculum Corporation, 2007). It prides itself in having up to date records that schools can access. these include video, CD Roms, kits, posters, pictures, games, charts, websites, slides, maps and books. In 2007 SCIS found 85% of schools used SCIC, they have 970,000 records and 3500 new records are entered each month !!! No wonder I've heard of SCIS at work !!
