Thinking about the broader library.

In reflecting on the role of the TL I explored the websites of different libraries and associations. The ALIA is a professional organisation seeking to empower the profession, develop, promote quality library and information services to the nation. I liked the student aims .. to maximise opportunities for students to obtain independent lifelong learning and decision making skills. Wow !!They go further into detailing TL role also ... worth a look on their website : http://www.alia.org.au/
How do I stack up ? It is a lot to aspire to !! The principle .. " The library and information sector has a distinctive area of knowledge and skills which is required for effective professional practice." This is why I am loving this course ... learning lots that I can practically apply to my job. As a new TL I can see many areas to work on ... understanding the changing technology is a main one. Just doing this blog is an achievement ... and finding it again to write on ... so you can see this an area I need upskilling in. I feel my strengths lie in people skills, communicating and responding to their needs.
The State Library of NSW traces back to 1826and also has a rich and interesting history.
The National Library of Australia is our largest reference library. It's role centres around ensuring documentary resources significant to our nation are collected, preserved and accessible.
Dagmar Schmidmaier's address "Education for the Library Profession in the Digital Age" put all this into succinct words that summarized what I had read. The gist of it was that libraries are an integral part of the education process. I agree ,but do our colleagues in other subject areas see our role  in the same way? Yes , this is the challenge. But I love one of the concluding comments ... " you're providing me with information I didn't know I needed !"
