My mind boggles at the differing views and opinions of what Information literacy (IL) is !!
What is true is that there is no one accepted definition. What began as library skills has generally in the literature been included now as a combination of information skills, cognitive skills( critical thinking, higher order skills) and attitudes ( life long learning). [adapted from a post from a fellow student, Irene Lu].
It is seen by many as a basic survival tool due to the ever expanding technologies. IL is recognised by schools, tertiary education and the workplace as vital, but who is responsible and how do we ensure it actually happens. It is clear that just as definitions differ, so do people's perceptions of their role in this .
Another important consideration is how do schools ensure that our students become ILiterate? Do we use a particular model, are we all on the same page in this regard. How do we ensure IL is built upon each year, or infact in any/ all subject areas.
Again, we come down to school focus, collaboration and lots of hard but rewarding teaching. if we are to see results in our student learning, then these big issues need to be addressed.
