How apt it is to be reflecting back on this .... as a library staff can be in the firing line sometimes if anything to do with a book or resource is not in the right place at the right time. So, I look forward to gleaning some ideas !!
Harvry, TR. Bearley, WL and Corkrum, SM (2001) Core Steps in Decision Making.
A. Leaders can spend a lot of time making decisions or helping others solve problems which can be draining or revitalising.- identify the problem
- develop possible solutions
- choose a course of action
I can agree with that !!!
- "view problems as opportunities for action and as learning experiences"(p.20)
- If there is a clear vision then a solution should be able to be made in a trusting and supportive environment.
- understand the context of the problem for your school.... links to previous situations??
- who are the stakeholders and therefore attitudes, biases, skills, knowledge, needs.
C.Solution written in outcomes.
D. Possible solutions
E.Solution choice
F. Implementation
Chapter 2 Winzenried- Manager or Leader ?
There are no once and for all solutions... so why do we expect it from leaders??Good question !!
Again we are talking about making a change and having to have a clear moral purpose.
This means VISIONARY LEADERSHIP !!!
- take initiative
- provide new ways to improve services
- deal and manage solutions
- and a positive attitude
A TL needs to be "ensuring that goals are met and differences made "(p.67).
Covey (1990) - circel of influence, Donham (2005) - Locus of control/ leading from the middle.
Goleman's 6 Leadership Styles (1998)
- Coersive
- Authoritative
- Affiliative
- Democratic
- Pacesetting
- Coaching
"Leadership in the library needs to be proactive....VL is essential" (p.78).... be clear of your goals.
P.82 was quite confronting and stimulated discussion ... "The way they use their influence will have an effect on their future and the future of their operation ".
What are we doing in the library??
