I totally agree with you that leaders should adapt their leadership style to suit the individuality of the staff members. Just as we would adjust our teaching to suit the individual learning styles of our students. This also works for behaviour management, not every student likes to recieve stickers, some prefer a pencil... Some students find it difficult to accept praise, even when it is earned, we have to be very considerate of our students' needs in this regard too.

Lots of comments on forum about differing leadership styles..

Barbara Allan in 'Supervising and leading teams in ILS' (2007) states that confident leaders:
* know what they want to achieve and have a clear sense of team's goals;
* articulate the goals and outcomes in clear manner that is relevant for a team;
* are aware of their own feelings and are sensitive to others and this will be reflected in their language;
* respect themselves and others and this will be demonstrated by their having clear boundaries;
* are open about what they think and how they feel; they are able to present this in a non-threatening and non-manipulative manner. They will give others the opportunity to say how they think or feel within a safe and supportive culture; and
* feel comfortable giving constructive feedback. (Allan, 2007, p.32)

Hough and Paine (1997)

They use different headings for leadership styles ... and state that decision making is a process by which a course of action is decided to solve a specific problem.They focus on strategic planning(p.122)
