I agree with you Margaret. The school
that I am at presents many opportunities each day that we need to seize. So
many, that the scheduled work sometimes is put off for the next day!
I think that contributes to the unique role that a TL has - to make decisions promptly - sometimes with imperfect data. When a library user makes a request, we need to react promptly, using all the skills mentioned by Donham - we need to know where to find information promptly, we need to communicate and listen to assess how we can assist and we need to work collegially so that our users want to come back for more.
It's a very dynamic field to work in and very rewarding when people acknowledge the help they have received. It's also great when you see students helping their peers locate information that you helped the initial student with.
