Hider and Harvey, (2008). Definitions and Introductory comments.. Chapter 1.
The library collection used to be what a library owned. Now it includes what the library gives access to with the technology allowing us to access documents in other libraries and indeed in other countries !!We are discussing why it is necessary to organise information effectively.Angela Morris put it succinctly ( Mon 9-July, 2012, 8:03pm)."As a library's essential goal is to bring together the client with what they need, how that information is organised will have a direct effect on the success of this endeavour".So true. Emma Wundersitz (Tues - 10- July, 3:11pm) reflects that as a TL we need to try to make using the library a time efficient and positive experience. If " people do not have a positive experience at a library, less people then come to the library, the library’s patronage drops dramatically, those who fund the library cannot justify the funds they are putting into an under-used facility, the library closes, other libraries are now viewed with negative connotations. Yet the same process can also work in reverse if people view libraries as efficient and helpful. " This is a huge issue we have to grapple with.
Andrea King (Mon 9-July, 2012, 9:34pm)shared her analogy for teaching students why we organise the library as we do. I thought it was worth repeating. She explains that the library is like a supermarket. They "present their product (information) in a number of ways but choose to do it via same groupings." Andrea discusses with her students "if this information was presented by brands what would happen? Would it make it easier to find information or more difficult?" She talks about "having to move backwards and forwards between the brands to find the best price for a product or compare sizes, etc."Then the students "discuss this in regards to information in a library and why it is important to find a way that organises it most effectively not just organises it. A simple analogy but one that students can relate to." I love it ! I have a fun and simple story of how Mr and mrs dewey store books in their house, but although the kids understand it, I think the supermarket analogy is better. Thanks Andrea !!!
Catherine Rigg (Tues 10-July 9:54pm) shared a link to a You Tube clip "The Joy of Books"
