Goleman, D 2000, 'LEADERSHIP THAT GETS RESULTS', Harvard Business Review, 78, 2, pp. 78-90, Health Business Elite.
Goleman suggests, and I agree that a leader who has a range of leadership styles will influence a wider variety of people. He outlines 6 leadershipstyles:coercive, authoritative, democratic, affiliative, pacesetting and coaching leaders.Goleman suggests that we measure a leaders impact by looking at their sphere of influence and observing the working environment."The most effective leaders switch flexibly among the leadership styles as needed" (p.87).I can see this is true with my library head. She is well able to change roles as appropriate. At times she may need to be more authoriative, sharing the vision. Other times she may need to be coersive when discussing changes that need to be implemented with other departments. I can see other aspects of the leadership styles as I look at the example she is to the staff. I hope as I develop in my TL career I can aspire to follow in her footsteps!
